Personality: Though Itachi appears cold and aloof at best and downright cruel at worst, he is a peaceful person at heart. When he was four years old, he witnessed the horrors of war, and that trauma caused him to hate conflict. Were it up to him, he would not have to fight at all, but the circumstances which he was born into have not allowed that. As an Uchiha, he was expected to excel in everything he attempted, and excel he did. Naturally, someone with his skill was to be a fine shinobi. Being a shinobi meant fighting, it meant killing, it meant doing everything he was against, but he did it anyway out of a sense of obligation to his peers.
He doesn't take pleasure in battling other ninja, though he pretends to for the sake of keeping up his facade. He fights cruelly, ruthlessly, but it is with the hope that his power will bring an end to the fight before more blood can be shed. It is for this reason that he favors genjutsu over other methods of fighting; with an illusion, he can incapacitate an opponent without having to kill them. This often results in mental trauma for his targets, but he sees it as a necessary evil when it comes to saving lives.
Itachi has performed many necessary evils in his lifetime. When he was only 13, Itachi was given an impossible choice: eradicate his clan, or sit back and let them wage a coup d'etat against his village, which would weaken their defenses and give other villages the chance to wage war against them. It wasn't without much internal conflict that he chose the former, but despite his staunch sense of obligation, Itachi could not bring himself to kill his younger brother, who had no idea what his clan was planning at the time. Itachi saw Sasuke as innocent, someone to be protected at all costs. He refused to murder him and plead with the village elders to allow him to stay alive and in the dark.
Itachi's love for his brother is one of the defining traits of his character, though he rarely shows it. Every action he takes is for the sake of his brother or his village, in hopes that his suffering and sacrifices will pay off in the end. He has no qualms with lying, deceiving, even giving up his life for those he cares about, as long as he believes that it will improve the quality of their lives. He dislikes causing pain and trauma to his brother, but he does it with the hope that one day Sasuke will kill him, avenge their fallen clan, and be regarded as a hero.
Despite having good intentions, he is not without his faults. The most prominent being that Itachi believes his own abilities to be sufficient enough to achieve his goals, and because of that, he refuses to accept help. He believes that it is his burden to ensure that everything works out well, and others are to be protected (Sasuke especially). He puts so much stock in his own abilities that he believes he can solve any problem that comes his way, no matter how often things go wrong. His health is failing, both by way of disease and imminent blindness, and the strain he puts on himself attempting to make sure everything goes as planned only speeds the process along. Itachi is driven by a desire to right his wrongs no matter what, though, and this pushes him forward despite the state of his physical body.
Though he was prepared to live out the remainder of his life as a criminal after the massacre, he's plagued by the horrid guilt that comes with making such a decision. One of his reasons for motivating Sasuke to kill him was so he could rest knowing that he'd been killed for his misdeeds, and honor would be restored to his family name. He will bring suffering down upon himself, but he dislikes showering it down on the people around him. As such, he attempts to right whatever wrongs he's made in the past to the best of his ability. He doesn't believe that his death will erase the past, but he hopes that it will help those who he effected with his actions rest easy.
Itachi takes things such as facts and black-and-white opinions with a grain of salt. He thinks that reality is ever-fleeting, and one's reality can be changed in an instant. He states that you won't know who you really are until the moment of your death, and even if you and everyone around you are convinced that you're an evil person, you might well think differently just before you die. This outlook on life has made him very receptive to change, and he's able to roll with whatever situations life throws at him with relative ease. It also soothes his mind when he thinks about his own death, so he's more accepting of the fact that his time will come soon.
He's always tried to keep people at an arm's length. Even his own father confessed to not knowing what was going on in Itachi's head most of the time. He's capable of getting close to people, as is evidenced by the close friendship he shared with Shisui, but having so many responsibilities and so many worries has made him appear closed-off to others. He's not above being civil with his comrades, however. He's one of the only people in Akatsuki who gets along with his partner, going so far as to give Kisame a few words of philosophical advice when they first met. He always seems to look out for Kisame's wellbeing, advising him against fighting opponents who may prove to be too troubling for him (though this also ties in with his desire to avoid fights as much as possible).
Abilities: Sharingan
The Sharingan is an eye-based hereditary technique that grants the user many unique abilities. It constantly drains the user's chakra when active, but to an Uchiha, the drain is so slight that it's barely perceptible. Because of this, Itachi keeps his Sharingan activated near-constantly.
Increased Perception; The Sharingan gives color to a person's chakra, which allows the user to differentiate between them. The user can also tell if the chakra flow is abnormal, which lets them know if the person they're looking at is under the influence of a genjutsu. They are granted the ability to see their opponent's movements almost as if they were happening in slow motion, reading motions that would be nigh-imperceptible to the naked eye. They can then use this knowledge to either evade an attack, or counter it.
Mimicry; Using their increased perception, a Sharingan user can also copy their opponents' movements and techniques. However, they must have the proper skills to copy a technique (so it wouldn't be possible to copy one of a higher level, so to speak, than thier own), and they are unable to use this ability to copy hereditary techniques. The mimicry ability extends to non-combat motions such as handwriting, as seen when Itachi fakes his best friend's suicide note flawlessly.
Hypnosis; A type of illusory ability that is cast through eye contact between the user and the victim. The user manipulates the victim's reality and suggests that they think and act a certain way. Itachi is seen using this technique on a civilian woman in one episode, where he makes her flirt with another character in order to distract him. However, this technique was seen through and countered before too long, suggesting that someone under the Sharingan's hypnosis can be detected by someone with a ninja's sensory abilities.
Izanami; One of the Sharingan's ultimate techniques. The user must memorize a certain motion made in battle by both himself and his opponent, and is then capable of trapping the opponent in an illusion. The opponent is locked in a time loop, able to make different choices, but the end result will always be the same. The kinjutsu can be broken out of once the opponent acknowledges the consequences of whatever action they took, and accept their ultimate fate. The eye used to cast this technique will go blind, and the Sharingan in that eye will be sealed away forever, rendering it unable to be transplanted.
Mankegyo Sharingan
A stage of the Sharingan that can be unlocked only by killing your closest friend. Its techniques cause the user's eyesight to deteriorate, a condition that can only be reversed by removing your own eyes and replacing them with the eyes of a sibling or other close family member (which Itachi has not done). Itachi is skilled with these techniques, but as a result, his vision is incredibly poor.
Tsukiyomi; A technique that Itachi can cast with his left eye, through direct eye contact with his opponent. When he locks eyes with his opponent, they go comatose. Mentally, they believe they are being tortured; a few seconds of real time can feel like days to someone under Tsukiyomi's influence. Itachi does not need to be present to continue torturing a person who he's cast Tsukiyomi on, but using it drains his energy signifcantly.
Amaterasu; A technique that Itachi can cast with his right eye. It causes black flames of an incredible heat (rumored hotter than the sun) to spring up wherever he's looking. They continue to burn until the target is reduced to ash, they're sealed forcibly, or Itachi manually surpresses the flames. They cannot be extinguished through normal means, such as oxygen deprivation or having water thrown on them, and even if Itachi is killed, the flames will continue to burn. This technique is very taxing, and Itachi's eye will often start to bleed when he uses it.
Susanoo; A technique that summons an ethereal warrior to fight on Itachi's behalf and protect it from harm. Itachi's Susanoo specifically wields two legendary items: the Yata Mirror, capable of nullifying almost any attack, and the Sword of Totsuka, which seals away whoever it pierces into a dreamlike state for eternity. His Susanoo is also able to use a ranged weapon: the Yasaka Magatama, which is essentially three sharpened tomoe held together with a chakra thread. This technique causes an extreme strain on the user's body and eyes, and is a technique Itachi is saving for his fight with Sasuke.
Ninjutsu
The ninja arts. Techniques that can be cast by focusing chakra, and usually take on elemental forms. With his Sharingan, Itachi can copy his opponent's ninjutsu.
Shadow Clones; Itachi can create solid clones of himself that are capable of fighting alongside him. When they are injured, they disappear. Itachi's clones in particular can turn into a flock of crows when they disappear, or they can explode if he so chooses.
Fire Release; Fire-style techniques that many Uchiha clan members are gifted with. This includes the ability to breathe out a large ball of fire (Itachi's own fire being noted as particularly high in temperature) and the ability to infuse shuriken with fire.
Water Release; Water-style techniques. He's particularly proficient with these as well. He's able to use water-style ninjutsu without an existing water source nearby, and can make things like large drills or dragons out of water for combat purposes.
Genjutsu
The illusory arts. Most of Itachi's genjustu fall under the abilities granted to him by the Sharingan. In addition, it is noted that he can cast genjutsu just by lifting a single finger (as opposed to forming handseals), and, through use of his Sharingan, he can read a genjutsu's weakness and turn it back on his opponent in an instant.
Taijutsu
The physical arts. Itachi is very skilled at this sort of combat as well, and is able to easily take on multiple other ninja even without the use of his other techniques. His speed is particularly notable, allowing him to simultaneously weave hand seals and throw shuriken, as well as use the Body Flicker technique with relative ease. He's strong enough to crack a wall by throwing a person against it, and he's able to brush off other attacks with ease, such as when he stopped Sasuke's Chidori with one hand.
Weapons Proficiency
Itachi is skilled with a number of weapons.
Shuriken; As noted above, he is able to throw large amounts of shurkien while weaving handsigns. He can also hide shuriken inside of crows created with his genjutsu.
Kunai; Itachi is very skilled with these as well. One routine in particular allows him to toss several kunai in the air, ricochet them off of each other, and hit the center of nine different targets, one of which is behind a blind spot, all while he's in midair himself.
Katana; Likewise, Itachi has shown proficiency with swords as well. It's not his favored weapon, but he's just as skilled with it as he is with projectile weapons.
Miscellanious
Intelligence; Itachi has shown great critical thinking skills, and is able to think many steps ahead. He has several back-up plans in place should his original plan fall through. In addition, he's able to think about situations rationally even under pressure, and can figure out an opponent's weakness in a very short amount of time. It's rare that he's caught off-guard by something, and when he is, he's able to get over it quickly and figure out a way to conbat whatever new challenge that's been thrown at him.
Stamina; Though Itachi's stamina is below-average (mainly due to the toll using Sharingan takes on him), Itachi is able to persevere and continue to fight for a very long time. Despite being half-blind, he can take on strong opponents, and he's able to hold his own for as long as he needs to. After such a fight, however, he has to rest for quite a while before he's able to fight again.
Shisui Uchiha's eye; He's able to summon a crow that has had a Sharingan eye implanted in it. This eye belonged to his best friend, Shisui, whose Sharingan was capable of implanting a suggestion in the victim's head that they are unable to go against. This only works once every decade, and Itachi intends to use it against Sasuke to force him to protect Konoha regardless of his own wishes.
Sample Entry: A dear_mun thread, and a prose sample:
He could hardly see the squirrel that climbed up a tree directly in front of his face. The trees themselves looked like brown and green blobs surrounding him, and he didn't even see the puddles from the recent rain until he stepped in one. It had gotten to the point where he didn't even bother to squint. It no longer did any good.
He took solace in the fact that he wouldn't have to strain his eyes much longer. He would meet up with Sasuke, play his part, and die like he'd decided to years ago. It would be more painful, perhaps, than any fight he'd fought before, physically speaking. Mentally was another matter entirely; he didn't think any fight could be more painful than the one he'd waged against his clan when he was younger.
This one would be a relief, he thought. He could deal with his brother's anger and hatred, the powerful jutsu he'd no doubt mastered after years of training under Orochimaru, and die knowing he'd cleared Sasuke's mind once and for all. He would rid him of the curse mark, lend Sasuke some of his power to deal with Madara, and if any of that failed, he had Naruto to rely on. Granted, he still needed to talk to the boy, to ascertain if he was truly capable of looking after Sasuke, but he had little doubt that he was. Something in the boy's face, his tone of voice, reminded him of Shisui, which was enough of a reason to trust him in itself.
He cast one last lingering glance at the squirrel where it sat perched, formless and blurry, on the branch above his head, then started off. He had work to do.
